Job Description

Our successful nationwide Energy business has a new opportunity for an experienced Senior Power Systems Engineer to join our multi-disciplinary team in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington or Christchurch. As part of our high performing, dynamic team, the Senior Power Systems Engineer contributes to the growth and success of the wider ANZ Energy business, specifically the ANZ Power Systems modelling business.

Working within our close-knit team of energy specialists, you will be responsible for the power systems modelling and design of HV transmission, distribution and generation projects throughout Australia, NZ and the world. You will contribute to the design of critical electrical infrastructure in Australasia and the Pacific that will ultimately improve the reliability and quality of supply to these communities.

As a Senior Power Systems Engineer you will be relied on to strengthen our market leadership, building effective relationships with our clients and contribute to the business delivery of our strategic and operational performance objectives. You will also participate in the development and training of leading-edge technical skills and understand how to practically apply them in ways that add value to AECOM and its clients.

Day to day responsibilities include:

  • Undertaking detailed power system/grid code compliance studies using tools such as PSS/E, PSCAD and Digsilent’s PowerFactory

  • Undertaking grid connection due diligence including grid prospecting, connection optioneering, risk assessment and capacity/constraints assessment

  • Supporting and advising clients on the best technical and commercial outcomes for their projects

  • Delivering concept and detailed design of HV substation systems

  • Leading and managing design projects

  • Supporting business process improvement initiatives

  • Writing technical design reports

  • Developing connections with colleagues in other NZ, Australian and global offices to develop new business.

Qualifications

  • Proven professional experience working for a design consultancy, OEM or utility network

  • Good understanding of transmission and distribution planning and customer connection processes for regulated and industrial networks.

  • Experience in detailed grid connection studies using PSS/E-PSCAD and Digsilent’s PowerFactory including PSS/E-PSCAD benchmarking and Model Acceptance Test (MAT).

  • Proficient in Python Scripting.

  • Experience in managing designs for renewables connection projects at transmission or distribution level.

  • Demonstrated understanding of control and protection principles of high voltage substation equipment, transmission lines, generators, transformers, reactive equipment, etc.

  • Basic understanding of power electronics and control systems related to renewable technologies.

  • Demonstrated experience in preparing technical design documentation/reports.

  • Exceptional levels of written and oral communication.

  • Accredited CPEng or working towards Chartership status would be advantageous.
