We are looking for a Level 3 Apprentice to join our Rail, Bridges and Structures team in Bedford. The successful applicant will receive on the job training whilst working on a wide range of bridge and other transportation structures projects, under the direction of experienced engineers one of whom will be responsible for providing mentoring during your development. Interested candidates would be encouraged to supplement this with developing their academic qualifications via a placement at a local college or University and ultimately apply for professional membership of an appropriate engineering institution.

Our Rail, Bridges and Structures division employs over 400 employees across the UK and Ireland, as well as many others in Europe and across the globe providing significant opportunites and support. Our clients are also varied and include national and local government highway and rail authorities, major civil engineering contractors and private developers.

Current projects include:

  • A428 Black Cat to Caxton Gibbet Highway Improvements

  • A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon Improvements - Huntingdon Railway Viaduct Demolition

  • CAFA Rail Structures Assessment Programme

  • ODI Area 6 and 8 Highway and Bridge Maintenance and Improvements

Responsibilities will include:

  • Production of CAD (Computer Aided Design) drawings

  • Undertaking graphical design and desk top publishing

  • Carrying out design and assessment calculations

  • Supporting the administration of projects, including creating and maintaining records

  • Assisting with data review and analysis

  • Ensuring outputs are accurate and meet the required standards

  • Contributing to providing engineering solutions to our clients' problems

  • Assisting with site visits to collect information or observe existing situations

You will combine your work-based on-the-job training and learning with further studies and will be encouraged to progress your career in a pro-active manner. After an initial probationary period you must be willing and available to undertake a day release course at a Further Education College or University to study Civil Engineering at HNC then Degree level as an Apprentice, and ultimately achieve Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status.

Minimum Requirements

No previous experience is necessary but the position is ideally suited to school leavers at A-Level or equivalent standard who can demonstrate:

  • Minimum of 5 GCSE’s at grade ‘C’ or above, including Mathematics & English

  • Three A-Levels (or equivalent) including Mathematics and Physics or Chemistry

  • Show an aptitude towards software-based engineering and drawing e.g. Computer Aided Design (CAD) and other similar 3D software

  • Demonstrate an interest in and a desire to pursue a career in Bridge & Structures Engineering

  • Commitment to continued education and improvement through on-the-job learning and training opportunities.

  • Creative, practical, adaptable and enthusiastic

  • Ability to demonstrate attention to detail

  • Ability to think in a methodical way to design, plan and organize parts of projects

  • English language proficient, holding excellent communication skills to present information in speech, drawings and reports
