Job Description
AECOM has an opportunity for a Senior Electrical Engineer in the role of “Electrical, Controls and Instrumentation Discipline Lead” for a full-time position in AECOM Canada’s Mining and Industrial team. The ideal candidate will have a successful track record in team management, delivering conceptual, preliminary and detailed design phases, and construction services of mining and industrial projects. They will work in a team environment with intermediate and senior engineers to deliver studies and detailed designs projects to our clients based in Western Canada, Canada and the US and beyond.
The Electrical Controls and Instrumentation Discipline Lead will provide mentorship to more junior staff – guiding them in their technical development and recommending training and investment necessary for those staff to progress in their career and in alignment with our mining and industrial group strategic requirements.
Excellent communication skills will be required for this role for clarity in staff support/coordination, scope communications, confirmation of client expectations, certainty in delegation and confidence in company representation to clients
This position may be based in any of our Western Canada offices – it is expected that the successful candidate will initiate team growth within the same office but may hire strategic personnel and supporting teams in other geographies where more pragmatic.
The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
Leadership Expectations:
Mentor junior staff to develop skill sets that support AECOM and Mining and Industrial team goals.
Establish and maintain training, development and succession plans to develop a high performing team in support of our mining and industrial clients and our strategic objectives.
Provide leadership and engineering decisions to facilitate the delivery of Electrical designs, including Power, Control, Instrumentation and Communications systems.
Manage the team adherence to AECOM's project and Quality standards, including capability of learning and adopting clients' standard and requirements upon request.
Promote accuracy, completeness and quality of technical aspect on project documentation produced in accordance with AECOM QA/QC procedures and the clients' standards.
Technical Capabilities:
Ability to plan, design and / or supervise the development of power and grounding system models (eTAP, CDEGs or equivalent), lighting and low-tension systems (i.e. fire alarm, security, CCTV, communications network, etc.).
Ability to plan, design and / or supervise the production of drawings and functional descriptions / specifications for complete automation systems including field and panel control devices and SCADA for various processes including ore mining materials handling systems, water/wastewater treatment and other industrial applications.
Ability to plan and produce procurement packages for Electrical equipment and installation scope of work to facilitate project tender process, including the production of relevant supporting engineering design documentation.
Ability to Plan and produce engineering reports using sound engineering logic and written expression in English and/or French that is cohesive, clear and concise on Electrical subject matters.
Demonstrate creativity, proactiveness, foresight and mature judgement in anticipating and solving both routine and unusual project delivery, technical and client challenges.
Ability to work with Construction Contract Administrator to review Electrical aspects of Shop Drawings, prepare and issue responses to contractor queries.
Ability to lead site inspections and issue inspection reports, issue Field Instructions and Field Orders, and prepare deficiency reports.
Ability to lead a team in providing technical support through all phases of the project.
Client Management Skills:
Perform the client-facing role of Project Manager or Deputy Project Manager on small to medium projects managing a multi-disciplinary team and project controls staff. Deliver the project in a timely manner to expected quality and allocated budget.
Qualifications
Minimum requirements:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent 8+ years Electrical engineering design experience in a multidisciplinary team environment for heavy industry such as mining, including field services during construction phase of projects.
Registered as a Professional Engineer in British Columbia.
Preferred qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized/accredited institution.
20+ years Electrical engineering design experience in a multidisciplinary team environment, including field services during construction phase of projects.
Familiar with the Canadian Electrical Code.
Possess current knowledge and ability to interpret and apply the relevant industry standards (CSA, ANSI, ISA, IEEE, NFPA, etc.) and their application for compliant designs.
Proven track record in design and production of engineering documents such as procurement packages (scope of work, equipment datasheets / specifications), P&IDs, single line diagrams, control network diagrams, electrical and instrument location drawings, loop & schematic wiring diagrams, cable & tray calculations, cable schedules, load list and instrumentation lists.
Proven track record in the design of low and medium voltage distribution, substation designs, grounding designs, transformers, UPS and interface with controllers such as Rockwell PLCs.
Must be able to interpret engineers' notes & specifications to deliver the scope in timely manner with minimum amount of supervision.
Strong verbal and written communication skills in English and/or French.
Capable of collaborating and communicating effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
Experience in the design of standby generation system, Power Factor Correction specifications, high-voltage transmission line systems, interface with controllers such as Delta V DCS.
Experience in working with drafting and modelling software such as AutoCAD, Revit and Navisworks.
Experience in working with Microsoft Project, OneDrive and Sharepoint.
Demonstrated experience and ability to interpret and use eTAP, PTW or other equivalent power system modelling tools.
Demonstrated experience with supporting business development in the mining and industrial market.
Critical thinking to identify issues, present solutions and follow through to achieve completion.
Additional Information
Sponsorship for Canadian employment is not available for this position.
Offered compensation will be based on location and individual qualifications. The expected range is $125,000.00 - $210,000.00.
