Job Description

AECOM is currently seeking a Senior Terrestrial Biologist , with a focus on wildlife, to join our Environment, Ecology, and Permitting team in Alberta. The ideal candidate has an advanced knowledge of relevant Alberta and Federal regulations. The position will involve working to provide guidance and advice regarding environmental investigations, including baseline studies, environmental impact assessments, environmental monitoring plans, permitting, and other related scopes of work. The successful candidate will work with an experienced team of scientists and technical specialists on permitting and environmental assessments and provide environmental support on multi-disciplinary projects in Alberta and across Canada. This position is predominantly office based with the potential for some field-based projects.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop, manage, and oversee field programs and reporting deliverables.

  • Coordinate, manage, and direct project tasks, data collection efforts, and fieldwork.

  • Provide advanced knowledge, and/or review for technical documents that support regulatory applications and permits.

  • Preparing and/or reviewing regulatory applications applicable to provincial and federal legislation.

  • Liaising with local, provincial, and federal agencies regarding permits and approvals.

  • Working with a large, multi-disciplinary team to execute projects and meet client expectations.

  • Assisting Project Managers with tasks such as drafting monthly project and budget update summaries, preparing meeting documentation, and scheduling and coordinating field programs.

  • Provide senior guidance and mentorship to junior and intermediate staff.

  • Preparation of proposals, budgets, and workplans.

  • Adhere and reinforce corporate safety, health and environment protocols and AECOM’s quality control program.

  • Familiarity with Alberta Utilities Commission Rule 007 including renewable energy project submission reports, Alberta Public Lands Act, Water Act, Fisheries Act, Endangered Species Act, Navigation Protection Act, Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, and other relevant legislation.

  • Research, conceptualize, plan, and write drafts of reports related to planning, design and permitting.

  • Project management including initiation, planning, execution, and closing.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Degree in Environmental Sciences, Biological Sciences, Natural Resources, Geological Sciences, or a related earth science field.

  • 10+ years of experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education as an environmental consultant or industry representative.

  • Professional Biologist designation in Alberta.

  • Experience with the Impact Assessment Act, Environmental Assessment Act, and other relevant legislation (e.g., Public Lands Act, Water Act, Fisheries Act, Endangered Species Act, Navigation Protection Act, Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, and their regulations).

  • Self-driven, hardworking, and motivated.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; comfortable liaising with clients, colleagues, and sub-contractors.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software applications.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Registered Professional Biologist in British Columbia or eligible to obtain the designation.

  • 12+ years of experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience.

  • Work experience in environmental consulting with technical expertise in wildlife; additional expertise in other environmental disciplines (aquatics, vegetation, soils, reclamation, or permitting) would be considered an asset.

  • Knowledge of provincial and federal environmental regulations and requirements across Canada.

  • Familiarity with sectors including renewable energy, transportation, oil and gas, transmission, and municipal developments.

Additional Information

Offered compensation will be based on location and individual qualifications. The expected range is $80,000.00 - $120,000.00.
