Our Ireland Roads Team currently has a vacancy for a Principal Highways Engineer within our Dun Laoghaire office following continued growth of the workload and the team.
We are looking to grow this team with individuals who have a sound technical background and business development capabilities that share our enthusiasm and determination to develop our business.
The successful candidate will be a Chartered Engineer, or close to achieving Chartered status, with extensive experience in highway engineering design and project management. They will be ready to take the next step in their career taking a leadership role in the delivery and co-ordination of projects and design packages on complex road and infrastructure projects alongside ensuring these projects perform financially.
They will have the ability to lead complex projects and deal directly with clients. They will also be capable of providing technical leadership with the wider team leading senior engineers, graduate engineers, technicians, and supporting disciplines to successfully deliver our projects.
The role will suit a self-motivated individual who is aspiring to take a lead role in project delivery and manage dynamic teams delivering high-quality projects. The person will need to adopt a flexible approach and be able to work away from our Dun Laoghaire office for short duration to suit project needs.
They will have experience of working collaboratively as part of a team developing a range of local, national, and international road schemes or similar major civil engineering projects, and will have been directly responsible for delivering scheme design
packages, and co-ordinating input from other disciplines.
The Dublin Highways team works both locally and across the UK & I market. Our current portfolio of works comprises a diverse mix of local, national and international highway and infrastructure improvements across significant delivery programmes for major Clients, including the A303 Stonehenge Project, the A55 Third Menai Crossing, the Foynes to Limerick TEN-T Core Network new road in Ireland, local council road improvements for the Midland’s Highway Alliance; strategic highway schemes for the Welsh government, Transport Scotland or Transport Northern Ireland, like the York Street Interchange in central Belfast; M3, M62 and M6 Smart Motorways, A428, A46, M54 Regional investment Programme projects for Highways England; and major integrated schemes such as the Mersey Gateway. Other projects include the London Highway Alliance, Dublin Airport Second Runway, the Forth Replacement Crossing in Scotland, the A1 Leeming to Barton project, the A47 Corridor Road Investment Strategy and the Stockholm Bypass in Sweden; the world’s largest highway tunnel project

Roads – Dublin, Team Overview:
Our Highways Team is involved in a number of high profile projects with a variety of clients across the Irish Public Sector, including TII, NTA, and many local authorities throughout Ireland. Recent successes have included the delivery of the daa Norther Parallel Runway Access Roads Package and delivery of the M7 widening detailed design which is currently on site. The Dublin highways team has been in place for over 20 years and has been responsible for delivery of a number of major road schemes in Ireland including the M8/N8 Cullahill to Cashel (40km), Kilkenny Central Access Scheme, A8 Belfast to Larne, and the A6 Randalstown to Castledawson.
Job responsibilities include:
Coach, mentor, support, and provide senior guidance and leadership for design team members – senior engineers, engineers, graduates, apprentices, and trainee technicians
Co-ordinates and manages project teams and small - to mid-size projects. It is expected the candidate will also take on AECOM financial management system responsibilities and will be responsible for project financial performance.
Serves as discipline Lead engineer on mid-to-large- size projects
Provides specialised technical input to studies and design for staff's specific area of expertise
Approves and signs off on work, and provides early verification of projects to ensure limited rework.
Provides technical direction for studies and design efforts
Presents complex technical solutions to clients
Performs quality control reviews of work developed by others
Participates in the development of technical proposals
Managing and developing both internal and external client relationships;
Work under the direction of and in support to project directors to deliver projects in accordance with agreed budget and schedule with little supervision, possessing the ability to solve any problems encountered along with identifying discrepancies in results
Managing the workload and the technical management and oversight of a design team;
Writing and overseeing the preparation of contract documents and technical reports as required;
Lead the provision of technical inputs, across a range of specialisms in the field of highway engineering
Show technical competence and through experience, gather and take on board the skills of others in computer-based applications and tasks including use of software such as MX, WinDES, and the Microsoft Office Suite of programmes including MS Project.
Ensuring compliance with all relevant technical standards;
Contribute to the development of technical proposals
Plan, lead and undertake site visits as required.
Plan and attend meetings – internal and external, as required.
Liaise and manage sub-consultants and external parties.
Participate as a team member on a number of levels, including; office disciplines and projects.
