AECOM Graduate Environmental Scientist in Germantown, Maryland

Job Summary

AECOM is actively seeking a highly motivated Entry Level Environmental Scientist. This is an entry-level position in AECOM’s Environment Business Line within the Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Technical Practice Area; position will report to EHS Department in AECOM’s Germantown, Maryland. The Environmental Scientist will work under supervision of a project manager or senior level team member on a variety of EHS projects, including but not limited to: environmental compliance plans and permitting, environmental site assessments, subsurface investigations, and hazardous material surveys.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducting and overseeing in the field, activities related to environmental assessment and remediation of sites impacted with petroleum products, drycleaner solvents, and/or other hazardous substances at private, state, local and federal facilities.

  • Tasks include overseeing drilling of wells and soil borings, overseeing excavation of contaminated soils, collection of soil and groundwater samples, and other field-related tasks.

  • Assisting project managers in preparing analytical summary tables, assessment reports and with developing environmental site assessment and remediation strategies for contaminated sites, and preparation of draft and final plans and reports for agency approval.

This Position:

  • Utilizes basic scientific principles, theories, practices and existing technologies to develop solutions for technical problems with limited scope.

  • Collects and enters data, and applies technical principles and theories.

  • Interprets and records data, conducts analyses, compares findings to relevant studies and local, state and federal regulations to ensure compliance.

  • Entry-level position; may not require previous experience

Minimum Requirements

  • BA/BS + None or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education

Preferred Qualifications

  • Educational background (bachelor’s degree at minimum) in an environmental-related field (e.g. environmental science, geology, etc.).

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

  • General knowledge of field environmental sampling techniques

  • Experience with AutoCAD

  • Experience with ArcGIS

  • Knowledge of Florida environmental regulations

  • 40 Hour HAZWOPER certification

  • Willingness/ability to be in the field and travel

  • Ability to perform detail-oriented work

  • Excellent technical writing and organizational skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills

  • Must have a valid driver's license and the ability to safely drive extended distances.

  • 0 to 2 years of environmental experience
