About Buildings + Places:
Our Buildings + Places practice includes architecture, interiors, building and system engineering, urbanism, and planning (inclusive of landscape design), strategy +, economics, technology solutions, asset advisory, and cost and program management. This diverse team assists our clients from strategy through project realization, creating positive outcomes for those who occupy and use the buildings and environments we help to create. Our California studio focuses on the Commercial/Corporate, Science and Technology, Higher Education, and Federal market sectors. We look to combine beauty, sustainability, resiliency, equity, and innovation in our projects and believe these values can be instilled in any project regardless of size or budget.
Some of our recent projects include tenant build-out spaces, a water reclamation office building and lab facility, a Joint Public Safety Training Center, Package distribution warehouses, and cutting-edge scientific research facilities.
AECOM is seeking a Fire Protection Intern to join the buildings and places team in the Orange, CA office.
This position is expected to begin in the spring of 2025
The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
Design fire sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems, special suppression systems, and more.
Develop life safety code compliance plans.
Assist in the development of permit documents.
Develop your engineering expertise by learning and applying fire protection principles, design techniques, and industry standards.
Assist in the engineering design process under the supervision of a senior engineer, ensuring that designs meet project requirements and safety codes.
Prepare designs, calculations, sketches, diagrams, schematic drawings, and final working drawings under the guidance of an experienced engineer.
Employ computer software tools to solve basic engineering problems and support the design and analysis of fire protection systems.
Perform tasks in accordance with the agreed-upon budget and schedule, ensuring project milestones are met while working under supervision.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- Candidates must be pursuing a bachelor’s degree or higher in Fire Protection Engineering and must have completed at least one year of study. Candidates who have recently graduated with a bachelor’s degree and plan to continue with the master’s degree are eligible to apply for these positions. Recent graduates must have been enrolled in their bachelor’s degree in the most previous school term with an interest in pursuing an advanced degree in the same or similar discipline at the conclusion of the internship.
Preferred Qualifications:
With a master’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering
Basic knowledge of fire protection systems, safety codes, and standards.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Familiarity with CAD software and fire protection engineering tools is a plus.
Eagerness to learn and develop skills in fire protection engineering.

Offered compensation will be based on location and individual qualifications. The expected range is $19.57/hour - $26.90/hour.
