Job Description

AECOM is currently seeking an Ecologist to join our growing Ecology Team in our Ottawa, Ontario office.

The successful candidate will have relevant experience, be highly motivated and accountable, enjoy working outdoors, collaborate well with team members, and be an effective communicator.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct biological and environmental fieldwork, including terrestrial vegetation surveys, wetland evaluations, wildlife surveys, breeding bird surveys, Species at Risk habitat screenings, aquatic habitat assessments, fish community sampling using various capture gear, and reptile/amphibian surveys.

  • Support ecological fieldwork for baseline studies, environmental impact assessments, Species at Risk permitting, mitigation plans, and related scopes of work.

  • Collect and interpret data to document baseline conditions in urban and remote sites across southern and central Ontario.

  • Work in rugged terrain for extended periods as part of field crews, depending on project locations.

  • Conduct Species at Risk habitat assessments and Significant Wildlife Habitat assessments.

  • Prepare scientific reports with accurate data interpretation.

  • Adhere to and enforce AECOM’s Safety, Health, and Environment protocols and quality control program.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, Biology, or a related field.

  • At least 2 years of experience in environmental consulting, industry, or a related field.

  • Valid driver's license (required for site visits, client meetings, and travel to AECOM offices).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Training and experience identifying Ontario flora and fauna (e.g., plants, birds, amphibians, mammals, insects, fish).

  • Experience conducting biological/environmental fieldwork.

  • Proficiency in air photo interpretation, GPS use, and map/compass navigation.

  • Experience in environmental inspection during construction is considered an asset.

  • Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is an asset.

  • Certifications in Ecological Land Classification, Ontario Wetland Evaluation System, or ISA Arborist are assets.

  • Additional field experience in water quality sampling or fish habitat assessments is an asset.

  • Strong motivation and willingness to learn.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and in a team environment, in both field and office settings.

  • Willingness to travel, including overnight stays of up to two weeks at a time.

  • Valid First Aid & CPR certification.

Offered compensation will be based on location and individual qualifications. The expected range is $60,000.00 - $75,000.00.
