AECOM Transportation Planning Intern in Southfield, Michigan

Job Summary

AECOM is actively seeking a creative, talented Transportation Planning Intern in our Detroit and Southfield, Michigan offices.

The position will help support AECOM’s varied planning, design and research projects for transportation agencies throughout the state, including Michigan DOT, transit agencies, municipalities, and other local governments. The individual will be responsible for developing written and graphical planning products to serve the needs of our diverse set of clients.

This individual will report to AECOM’s Planning Group Manager for Michigan, and support project work for clients throughout the state. Among other places, AECOM’s Michigan Planning Group is actively working in Detroit, Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Kalamazoo, and Flint. This group also supports AECOM’s national transportation planning practice.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Supports planning studies and reports for new and updated plans, programs and regulations

  • Reviews or assists in the review of development proposals and site plans for conformance with codes, plans and regulations.Prepares and presents detailed reports on development proposals to government bodies

  • Collects a variety of statistical data and prepares reports and maps on topics, such as census information, land use, transportation tax base data and occupancy rates

  • Assists in evaluating re-zonings, ordinance amendments, site plans, special use permits, variances and other proposals

  • Coordinates community review of public and private development projects

  • Provides information to the public regarding development regulations

  • Assists in resolving citizen and customer issues

  • Under direct supervision, conducts field evaluations and assessments

Minimum Requirements

  • Currently in pursuit of Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in traffic or transportation engineering/design or other related field required

  • Working toward degree in urban planning, transportation, geography, public policy, or related area of study

  • Demonstrated interest in multi-modal transportation planning and analysis, including analyzing and recommending solutions for urban transportation issues

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of planning, research and data collection

  • Analytic skills to interpret research data for reports and apply mathematical techniques in practical situation

  • Oral communication and interpersonal skills to explain planning concepts clearly to clients and the public

  • Presentation skills to synthesize data and research into compelling reports and graphics

  • Capable of multi-tasking and working in a fast-paced environment, including an ability to prioritize and meet task deadlines

  • Strong command of the written and spoken English language

  • Fast learner who is open to learning new concepts, specializations and software programs

  • Demonstrated knowledge of, and enthusiasm for, multi-modal transportation planning and analysis.Example projects include transit corridor studies, roadway design studies, pedestrian and bicycle enhancement plans, environmental analyses, transportation data collection, and policy or best-practice research

Preferred Qualifications

  • Pursuing advanced degree in urban planning, transportation, geography, public policy or related area of study

  • Some experience or exposure to transportation planning, and an interest in pursuing a career in this field

  • Knowledge of using GIS for spatial analysis

  • Knowledge in developing and presenting illustrative reports and graphics utilizing Adobe CS or other graphical software packages
