Due to strong demand for our Electrification & Power (E&P) design services, AECOM are currently looking for Graduate E&P Engineers to join our team in Swindon.

Our Rail Business Unit is a 650 strong employer of rail professionals developing and delivering multi-disciplinary design solutions across permanent way, signalling, telecoms, electrical, mechanical, civils and geotechnical engineering.

Recent impressive project wins with Network Rail and national major Contractors have provided opportunities to grow our resource pool at all levels across our UK offices with current key projects including Crossrail, HS2 (London/Birmingham/Manchester), S&C Renewals programme, and a wide ranging portfolio across the UK and internationally

Job Responsibilities:

Within the Electrification & Power Engineering discipline our Graduate Electrical and Mechanical Engineers will be involved in the design of the overhead contact systems and associated power distribution that provides continuous traction power to trains. The mechanical engineers will learn the different aspects of the design for complex steelwork and electrification wiring systems, as well as associated foundation design for specialist trackside infrastructure. Electrical engineers will be responsible for designs including HV and LV distribution, area lighting systems and electrical infrastructure for train operating and maintenance facilities. You will learn about the critical interfaces with both track (permanent way) and lineside structures. You will learn to apply the variety of standards which dictate the requirements and tolerances of the designs that will need to be undertaken.

You will be trained to carry out or review conceptual design and detailed design on a wide variety of E&P projects, as well as being tasked with preparation of drawings, calculations and reports for outline and detailed design commissions. You will work effectively as a member of a multi-disciplinary project team.

As a Graduate Engineer (Electrification & Power) you will use industry leading computer software and BIM modelling programs while working on a variety of different Rail specific expertise including:

  • Electrification system studies and modelling

  • Overhead Line Electrification systems

  • Tram Systems

  • Light Rail Systems

  • Substation design (replacement, enhancement or extension)

  • ETE (3rd / 4th Rail)

  • Ac/dc interface design

  • HV feeders 11, 22, 33 and 66kV (replacement or diversion)

  • HV switchgear (11, 22, 33 and 66kV) modification

  • Signalling power schemes (replacement, enhancement, extension or diversion)

  • Stray current mitigation

  • Substation earthing

  • EMC/EMI management

  • Points heating

  • Station and trackside building M & E services including lighting studies

  • Lightning protection

Candidates will get exposure to both a building services and an Electrification environment

Minimum Requirements

Successful candidates should:

  • Hold a BEng/ BSc and/or MSc/ MEng in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering (minimum 2:2 classification).

  • Be a creative, independent, self-motivated individual with the ability to work independently and take ownership of work

  • Be proactive about professional development and demonstrate a desire to continuously improve and develop as a designer.

  • Have good interpersonal, communication and presentation skills in written and spoken English and be a team player

  • A proven ability in accepting responsibility, meeting design deadlines and working as part of a design team.

  • Be able to make decisions and operate in a pro-active way to identify and effectively meet the requirements and expectations of clients.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Work experience in the rail industry would be advantageous
