AECOM’s UK Environment & Planning team is looking to recruit a Graduate Consultant to join our International ESIA - London and South East team. The ideal candidate will have a Master’s degree in Environmental Impact Assessment, process or environmental engineering or a related discipline with strong analytical, numerical and organisational skills and high attention to detail.

AECOM’s reputation in ESIA is second to none and we are involved in some of the world’s most challenging and complex projects. The successful candidate will have a desire to contribute to and develop skills for outstanding project delivery and client management.

Our UK Environment & Planning business comprises over 270 people across approximately 20 offices. In London and the South-East we have offices in Aldgate, Wimbledon, Croydon, St Albans, Cambridge and Basingstoke. We have over 100 ESIA practitioners and large teams of environmental specialists covering the full suite of technical disciplines such as acoustics, air quality, ecology, heritage etc. as well as specialists in international social assessment.

We provide support to clients at all stages of the development process including feasibility, optioneering, environmental engineering and design support as well as during the construction and operational phases of major projects.

Our EIA teams often work very closely with our engineering and design colleagues, who are delivering the sort of exciting projects you would expect from a global environmental and engineering consultancy with a reputation for developing and implementing innovative solutions to the world’s most complex challenges.

For our ESIA services we have an enviable client base which includes all of the major oil and gas companies, including BP, Shell, Exxon, TOTAL, ConocoPhillips and Tullow Oil.

The following provides a sample of our recent and current projects:

  • Tilenga Project (large onshore oil filed development in Uganda including wells, pipelines and processing facilities).

  • Shah Deniz Stage 2 Project (world’s largest gas project with the scope comprising terminal expansion, offshore platform, subsea wells and pipelines in Azerbaijan).

  • Shallow Water Absheron Peninsula Exploration Programme (including seismic surveys and drilling offshore Azerbaijan).

  • South Stream (4 gas pipelines across the Black Sea between Ukraine and Bulgaria).

  • Offshore and onshore seismic surveys and exploration drilling programmes in South America, Caribbean, Caspian Sea, Europe, and Africa.

This graduate level position will report to a Senior or Principal Consultant and will be expected to work on a range of projects; handling and being accountable for a number of tasks simultaneously. The role will require strong technical and management skills, excellent team working and communication skills and the ability to manage deadlines.


Responsibilities will include:

  • To support Project Managers/Project Directors in the delivery of ESIA projects and other related deliverables.

  • To provide technical input to ESIA and other deliverables as required.

  • To assist with the maintenance of project management tools e.g. associated with scheduling, communications, health and safety, subcontractors and finances.

  • To interact with the team and Project Managers/Project Directors to ensure the smooth running of projects.

  • To participate in team meetings, client briefs and other meetings as and when required.

  • To prioritise project actions and meet commitments on an on-going basis while taking ownership and responsibility for the quality and completion of work.

  • To assist the Project Manager/Project Director in the organisation and management of sub consultants and multi-disciplinary teams.

  • To understand and implement project management principles and appreciate the need to work within project budgets.

  • Understand and comply with quality and health & safety requirements and ensure these are addressed throughout a project.

  • To provide input to business development proposals (expression of interest and tender responses) and to continuously improve our service offering for our clients.

As part of the GDP we will expect our graduates to work in other AECOM sustainability and environmental teams on a rotational basis including our policy and appraisal, business sustainability and environmental technical disciplines teams.

Minimum Requirements

The ideal candidate will have a Master’s degree in EIA, environmental or process engineering or a related discipline.


  • Awareness of ESIA or environmental engineering as a technical specialism.

  • Awareness of project management principles and project financial control.

  • Awareness of oil and gas industry principles preferred.


  • Self-motivation and enthusiasm.

  • Ability to work as part of a team, collaborating with colleagues, client and stakeholders as appropriate.

  • Ability to work flexibly under pressure, responding to changing project and programme demands.

  • Strong numeracy, written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong skills in Microsoft Office.

  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.

  • Full Clean Driving licence beneficial.


  • Basic experience of ESIA and the oil and gas industry would be advantageous.

  • Previous experience of working in a consultancy environment would be preferable (but not necessary), including work placements or relevant voluntary experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Affiliate, Graduate or Associate membership of IEMA, IES or an equivalent professional organisation would be beneficial.
